NTT INDYCAR SERIES Preview: PPG 375 – Sunday, April 2, 2023 12:00PM (ET) NBC – The NTT INDYCAR SERIES returns after nearly a month off after the season opener on the Streets of St. Petersburg for what should be an exciting first oval race of the season at Texas Motor Speedway. Previous driver performance at Texas shows seven former winners entered in Scott Dixon (5), Helio Castroneves (4), Will Power (2), Josef Newgarden (2), Graham Rahal (1), Ed Carpenter (1), and Pato O’Ward (1). Newgarden (2022), O’Ward (2021 Race 2), and Dixon (2021 Race 1) are the three most recent winners. Looking at the box scores from 2022, and 2021 Race 2, and 2021 Race 1 only Dixon finished in the Top 5 of all three races. If that’s expanded to the Top 10, Dixon is joined by Newgarden, McLaughlin, Alex Palou, and Simon Pagenaud.

My pick to win: Scott Dixon – Even relative to his own lofty standards, Scott Dixon has been outstanding at Texas over the years. In addition to the five wins and Top 5 streak mentioned above, Dixon has two poles and has started in the Top 5 in each of the last five races at the circuit. This note from INDYCAR says all that needs to be said: “Dixon has led five of the last six race races, 678 of 1,404 laps in all (48.2 percent). That accounts for him being INDYCAR’s all-time leader in laps led at this oval with 1,043 laps, more than double the number of the active driver in second place. His average finish in all races at TMS is 6.7.”

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Scott Dixon $30, Scott McLaughlin $30, David Malukas $22, & Sting Ray Robb $18 – You know my thoughts on Dixon. This has been one of McLaughlin’s best tracks over the last two seasons as well where he dominated until the last turn of the last lap last year and finished P2 in his first oval race back in 2021 Race 1. Dale Coyne Racing cars have been fast over the years at Texas and Malukas had a solid showing last year. You just have to hope the rookie class will aim to make it to the finish after some tumultuous results at St. Pete and Robb should have the best car of them all. Keep an eye on Takuma Sato’s price for this event as well. At the time of writing it had not been posted yet and he should be one to watch this year with his speed and aggressiveness on ovals in an ultra quick Chip Ganassi Racing machine.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES Preview: XPEL 375 – Sunday, March 20, 2022 12:30PM (ET) NBC – The 2022 NTT INDYCAR SERIES takes a trip down to Texas Motor Speedway after a couple weeks hiatus from the opening race in St. Petersburg, FL. The NTT INDYCAR SERIES has been making the trip to Texas Motor Speedway since 1997 and today will be the 35^th series race at the track. With 27 entrants it’s shaping up for a real shootout under the Texas afternoon sun.

Qualifying for this year’s race was open, enabling teams to experiment with lower downforce setups since cars weren’t impounded prior to today’s race. The top 15 qualifiers laid down qualifying times within two-tenths of each other; which equates to an average speed variance of 0.772 mph over two laps! The top five qualifiers include four different teams and overall, there hasn’t been one team more dominate than the others this weekend. Seven past winners make up the starting grid in Texas today: Scott Dixon (5x), Helio Castroneves (4x), Will Power (2x), Ed Carpenter (1x), Graham Rahal (1x), Josef Newgarden (1x), and Pato O’Ward (1x). Twelve drivers in today’s field have led laps at Texas over the years, but six entrants are making their first start on the superspeedway: Devlin DeFrancesco, Callum Ilott, Kyle Kirkwood, Christian Lundgaard, Jimmie Johnson, and Romain Grosjean.

My pick to win: Felix Rosenqvist – Six drivers have won at Texas Motor Speedway from the pole including two drivers in today’s field: Josef Newgarden and Scott Dixon. Arrow McLaren SP now has a proven track record at Texas with Pato O’Ward winning race two in 2021.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Felix Rosenqvist $21, Will Power $29, Josef Newgarden $29, Kyle Kirkwood $18 – I’m starting to think that Team Penske will be off to the races this year and another win in Texas would cement that sentiment; so, I’ve picked both Power and Newgarden. Both Power and Newgarden are proven winners on ovals and have both been quick this year in Texas. Felix Rosenqvist has been quick at Texas the last couple of years and starting on the pole will hopefully keep him out of any early cautions. Kyle Kirkwood will likely be my “cheap” pick most races this year. Kyle’s upside his huge, he’s consistently won on every tier of the Road to Indy ladder and I believe he is highly capable of getting some top 10 finishes this year.

Betting Notes: Scott Dixon, starting P5 is listed as the favorite at +500. Two underrated odds in my opinion are series points leader Scott McLaughlin starting P2 and listed at +1000 and pole sitter Felix Rosenqvist listed at +1600. Felix and Arrow Mclaren SP have proven their speed at Texas the last couple of years, but just haven’t had the results to back it up. Long shot of the week (greater than +2500 odds) pick: Romain Grosjean at +3000. Even though this is Romain’s first race at a superspeedway, last year’s race in St. Louis proved that he was a quick learner and able to make some incredible moves on his first oval race. Now teamed up with Andretti Autosport, I don’t think it would be too outlandish to see Romain Grosjean bring home a win. (Odds provided by DraftKings)

NTT INDYCAR SERIES Preview: Genesys 300 – Saturday, May 1, 2021 7:00PM (ET) NBCSN & XPEL 375 – Sunday, May 2, 2021 5:00PM (ET) NBCSN – The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is back on track for the third weekend in a row with a doubleheader at Texas Motor Speedway. It’s a two day show making it tough on the teams to prepare and execute with practice, qualifying, and the first race all in one day on Saturday before the second race on Sunday.

Previous driver experience at Texas shows six former winners in the field in Scott Dixon (4), Will Power (2), Ed Carpenter (1), Tony Kanaan (1),  Josef Newgarden (1), and Graham Rahal (1). The entered Top 5 in laps led at the facility are Dixon (674), Power (432), Kanaan (372), James Hinchcliffe (196), and Newgarden (162). The last two winners are Dixon and Newgarden. Looking at the box scores from the last two Texas races in 2020 and 2019, only Newgarden has finished in the Top 5 in each of the last two races. If that’s expanded to the Top 10, Newgarden is joined only by Simon Pagenaud and Ryan Hunter-Reay.

My picks to win: Race: Scott Dixon & Simon Pagenaud – Scott Dixon absolutely dominated at Texas last year and it would be silly not to predict him to win at least one of the two races after the performance he and his team put on. His at-the-time Ganassi teammate Felix Rosenqvist was the only car in the field that seemed to be driving the same race (so keep an eye out here for the rest of Ganassi bunch this weekend). Pagenaud has been a steady performer at Texas since his switch to Penske racking up Top 5 finishes in four of his six Texas starts with the team and finishing in the Top 11 of all six. Pagenaud has developed into one of the best oval drivers in the series and has to be one of the favorites this weekend in my opinion. He’s due for a win at Texas.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Scott Dixon, Simon Pagenaud, Conor Daly, and Pietro Fittipaldi – You know my thoughts on Dixon and Pagenaud. Daly was incredible in Carlin colors last year when he filled in for Max Chilton at the non-Indy 500 ovals. He elevated the team around him and put in his best performances of the season with the team. I like his chances to put in one or two excellent finishes again this weekend for a good value at $23 in a harshly priced fantasy weekend. Fittipaldi is a total flyer at $19 but we know Dale Coyne Racing can get a car ready for ovals based on Bourdais and Ferrucci’s oval performances in recent seasons. He’s worth a shot if he and the team appear any kind of competitive in practice and qualifying.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES Preview: Genesys 300 – Saturday, June 6, 2020 8:00PM (ET) NBC – INDYCAR is back in prime time where practice, qualifying and the 200-lap race will all be held on the same day. Two-time Texas Motor Speedway winner Will Power is one of the favorites to win the race according to SBD. The day will be filled with COVID-19 protection measures for the drivers, teams, and officials on-site and there will be no fans in the stands on Saturday night.

Previous driver experience at Texas Motor Speedway shows six former winners in the field in Scott Dixon (3), Will Power (2), Ed Carpenter (1), Tony Kanaan (1), Josef Newgarden (1), and Graham Rahal (1). The active Top 5 in laps led are Dixon 517, Power 432, Kanaan 372, James Hinchcliffe 196, and Carpenter 92. Newgarden and Dixon are the last two winners. Looking at the box scores from 2019 and 2018, Rossi, Rahal, and Ryan Hunter-Reay have each finished in the Top 5 in each of the last two races. If that’s expanded to the Top 10, those three are joined by Simon Pagenaud.

There is so much to look forward to this weekend as INDYCAR kicks off its season in unexpected circumstances. The much discussed Aeroscreen makes its debut in the series on a high banked oval in crazy Texas heat. And it must be figured out fast with just one practice session in the early afternoon before qualifying and racing later in the day. The three rookies Oliver Askew, Alex Palou, and Rinus VeeKay will participate in their first race in the series at one of the craziest tracks, and for Palou it’s the first oval race of his career. Five drivers will begin the season with a new team in Charlie Kimball (AJ Foyt Racing), Patricio O’Ward (Arrow McLaren SP), Marcus Ericsson (Chip Ganassi Racing), James Hinchcliffe (Andretti Autosport for a second time), and Colton Herta’s first race as an “official” Andretti Autosport driver. It’s going to be an incredible day of NTT INDYCAR SERIES action!

My pick to win: Alexander Rossi – Rossi is one of the big favorites this weekend for good reason. First, Andretti Autosport cars are always quick at Texas. Second, Rossi is obviously one of the fastest drivers in the series and will be eager to start his quest for a championship strong at a track where he knows he can have success. He can have success because he’s finished second and third in the last two years and has been ultra fast under the lights at Texas. I think Rossi gets his first win at Texas Motor Speedway this year and gets to fire the guns as part of their incredible victory lane theatrics.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Alexander Rossi, Colton Herta, Felix Rosenqvist, & Conor Daly – You know my thoughts on Rossi. Herta was the fastest car in the field last year but crashed out in a close incident with Scott Dixon late in the race. Rosenqvist should provide good value at just $24 on a tough week budget wise after a Top 10 last year. Daly has raced well for Carlin despite poor luck in qualifying. He’s a good value pick for a Top 10 at just $22.

The active leaders in laps led at Texas are Dixon (484), Power (432), Kanaan (372), James Hinchcliffe (196) and Carpenter (92). Dixon and Power have won the last two races. Looking at box scores from 2018 and 2017, Pagenaud is the only driver to finish in the Top 5 in each of the last two years. If that’s expanded to the Top 10, he is joined by Dixon, Rahal, and Takuma Sato. My pick to win: Alexander Rossi – Rossi has been so fast over the last few races without a win to show for it. That’s due to change soon, so why not this weekend? He was obviously fast at Indy and arguably had the best car at Texas last year so he’s my pick to fire the guns in victory lane this weekend.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Alexander Rossi, Will Power, Sebastien Bourdais, & Colton Herta – You know my thoughts on Rossi. Power always races well at Texas and will be hungry to make up for recent struggles and misfortune. Bourdais and his Dale Coyne Racing team have produced great cars at Texas in recent years. You know Herta will be fast, you just have to hope he can make it ’til the end whether that’s luck or a tough first trip to Texas for the rookie.
