NTT INDYCAR SERIES Preview: Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach – Sunday, September 26, 2021 3:00PM (ET) NBCSN – The 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES concludes this weekend with the championship finale at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. The championship three are leader Alex Palou, Pato O’Ward (-35), and Josef Newgarden (-48). There are a whopping 28 entries this weekend with the same car and driver combinations from the last two weeks in Portland and Monterey with the addition of Charlie Kimball in the AJ Foyt Racing No. 11.

Previous driver experience (Part 1 & Part 2) at Long Beach shows nine former winners in the field in Sebastien Bourdais (3), Will Power (2), Alexander Rossi (2), Helio Castroneves (1), Scott Dixon (1), James Hinchcliffe (1), Ryan Hunter-Reay (1), Simon Pagenaud (1), and Takuma Sato (1). Rossi has won from pole in the last two NTT INDYCAR SERIES races at the circuit. Looking at the box scores from 2019 & 2018, Rossi and Graham Rahal are the only two drivers to finish in the Top 5 of the last two Long Beach races. If that’s expanded to the Top 10, those two are joined by Newgarden, Power, and Hinchcliffe. The active Top 5 in laps led at the circuit are Castroneves (179), Bourdais (173), Power (170), Hunter-Reay (151), and Rossi (151).

My pick to win: Race – Graham Rahal & Championship – Alex Palou – Rahal has been so consistently strong all year and is well overdue for a race win. I think this is the weekend he gets it done at a circuit where he has back to back Top 5’s and Firestone Fast 6 qualifying efforts. Palou will win the title with another one of his impeccable Dixon-esque Top 5’s to keep any drama of the title race entirely reliant on a mechanical issue.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Graham Rahal, Colton Herta, Alexander Rossi, & Ed Jones – You know my thoughts on Rahal. Herta is coming off a dominant performance at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and dominated earlier this year on the Streets of St. Pete. Rossi has owned this event and desperately needs a complete race weekend, this has to be the time right? Jones could be an excellent budget choice at just $20 this weekend and he’s been running stronger as of late.

Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Preview: Indy Lights Grand Prix of Monterey Presented by Cooper Tires – Race 1: Saturday, September 18, 2021 3:45PM (ET) Peacock & Race 2: Sunday, September 19, 2021 1:15PM (ET) Peacock – David Malukas and Kyle Kirkwood shared the wins last weekend in Portland to solidify themselves as the two drivers to settle the championship with just four races to go. Malukas leads Kirkwood by just 5 points heading into the weekend, but Kyle Kirkwood swept both races at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course earlier this season and that’s where the final two races of the championship will be decided so this is a huge weekend for Malukas.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES Preview: Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey – Sunday, September 19, 2021 3:00PM (ET) NBC – The NTT INDYCAR SERIES returns to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend after not making it to the circuit in 2020 due to COVID. The championship five still realistically in contention as we enter the final two race weekends of the season are Alex Palou, Pato O’Ward (-25), Josef Newgarden (-34), Scott Dixon (-49), and Marcus Ericsson (-75). There are once again 27 entries this weekend with the same car and driver combination seen last week in Portland.

Previous driver experience at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca shows just two former winners in the field in Helio Castroneves (1) and Colton Herta (1). Herta won the last NTT INDYCAR SERIES race at the circuit back in 2019 but the previous event goes all the way back to 2004. Here is the box score from the only recent NTT INDYCAR SERIES race at Laguna Seca in 2019 as Herta won over Will Power, Dixon, Simon Pagenaud, and Felix Rosenqvist. The active Top 5 in laps led at the circuit are Herta (83), Power (6), Dixon (2), Sebastien Bourdais (1), and Pagenaud (1).

My pick to win: Race: Alex Palou – I see no reason to pick against Palou this weekend after perhaps his best race of the year winning from pole despite adversity last weekend in Portland. Ganassi has done plenty of testing at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, which was already a strong Honda track in 2019, and I expect the team to be the class of the field this weekend.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Alex Palou, Graham Rahal, Jack Harvey, & Oliver Askew – You know my thoughts on Palou. Rahal is coming off his best qualifying performance of the year and drove another great race. He qualified well at Laguna Seca in 2019 and I expect him to be up front again. I still want to believe Jack Harvey and Meyer Shank Racing can leverage the speed they’ve consistently shown the last two years into a great race result for the No. 60. They’re well past due and a win or podium for Harvey would be a validating and deserved story. Askew should be an excellent choice as a budget selection this weekend at just $21.

Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Preview: Indy Lights Grand Prix of Portland Presented by Cooper Tires – Race 1: Saturday, September 11, 2021 4:55PM (ET) Peacock & Race 2: Sunday, September 12, 2021 1:30PM (ET) Peacock – David Malukas swept the top step of the podium at both races on the oval at World Wide Technology Raceway to take the championship lead in the last round. Malukas leads Kyle Kirkwood by 3 points and teammate Linus Lundqvist by 59 points heading into Portland. Two new drivers are entered this weekend with Rasmus Lindh in the Juncos Hollinger Racing No. 51 (formerly driven by Toby Sowery) and Manuel Sulaiman in the HMD Motorsports No. 59 (formerly driven by Nikita Lastochkin).

NTT INDYCAR SERIES Preview: Grand Prix of Portland – Sunday, September 12, 2021 3:00PM (ET) NBC – The NTT INDYCAR SERIES returns to Portland International Raceway weekend after not making it to the circuit in 2020 due to COVID. The championship five still realistically in contention as we enter the final three race weekends of the season are Pato O’Ward, Alex Palou, Josef Newgarden, Scott Dixon, and Marcus Ericsson. New team/driver combinations this weekend will be Oliver Askew in the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing No. 45 and the return of Juncos Hollinger Racing with European star Callum Ilott in their new No. 77 entry.

Previous driver experience at Portland International Raceway shows three former winners in the field in Sebastien Bourdais (2), Will Power (1), and Takuma Sato (1). Power and Sato won the two races at Portland. Looking at the box scores from 2019 and 2018, no one finished in the Top 5 in both races. Alexander Rossi, Newgarden, Simon Pagenaud, and Bourdais finished in the Top 10 in each of the last two races. The active Top 5 in laps led at the circuit are Bourdais (149), Power (66), Colton Herta (36), Rossi (32), and Sato (25).

My pick to win: Race: Colton Herta – Herta has been qualifying up front and in contention for a while now and is due to get another win. The Andretti contingent had speed at Portland last time out and Herta seems to be the class of the pack. He’s my pick for victory from pole this weekend.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Colton Herta, Alexander Rossi, Romain Grosjean, & Rinus VeeKay – You know my thoughts on Herta. Rossi has picked up his speed in recent events and just needs some things to go his way on race day. Grosjean may have a little more leveled playing field than usual without a race in Portland last year and his team has run well at the circuit in the past. VeeKay has a Portland win in Indy Lights and has finished no worse than second in four Road to Indy starts there. I expect him to rebound strong from what has ultimately been a disappointing second half of the season thus far.
