Indy Lights Preview: Cooper Tires Indy Lights Grand Prix Presented by Allied Building Products (Entry List), Race 1 – Saturday, September 21, 2019 6:00PM (ET) & Race 2 – Sunday, September 22, 2019 12:05PM (ET) – The Indy Lights championship has been provisionally won by Andretti Autosport rookie Oliver Askew as all Askew needs to do is start the final two races at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to clinch the title. It’s been an unbelievable season for Askew and he will be a deserving champion. It should be a fun weekend with plenty of drivers a threat to win but I expect Askew and Rinus VeeKay to continue to rise above the field as they have all year. My picks to win: Oliver Askew (Series Champion) – Oliver Askew & Rinus VeeKay (Races)

NTT IndyCar Series Preview: Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey – Sunday, September 22, 2019 2:30PM (ET) NBC – Previous driver experience at Laguna Seca shows just the four current drivers in the field have raced at the circuit in the NTT IndyCar Series in Sebastien Bourdais, Scott Dixon, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Tony Kanaan. Bourdais has a pole but none of those four have won an NTT IndyCar Series race at Laguna Seca. Obviously, there isn’t much recent NTT IndyCar Series history to base predictions off of, but Colton Herta was fastest in testing on Thursday and most seem to believe Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course should be the closest comparison to what we may see this weekend. 2019 race and qualifying results from Mid-Ohio show some big items to watch. Will Power, Alexander Rossi, Josef Newgarden, and Simon Pagenaud took the first four spots in qualifying which would be incredible to see this weekend with all of the potential championship implications. Of course Dixon went on to win the race, but rookie Felix Rosenqvist appeared to be the fastest car on track so he could be one to watch. My pick to win: Josef Newgarden (Series Champion) & Alexander Rossi (Race) – My gut feeling is either Alexander Rossi or Simon Pagenaud will take the race win but it won’t be enough as Josef Newgarden will join them on the podium. I think Rossi will be that guy this weekend. Newgarden has found trouble a lot this year, but I think that’s a different story now that we’re at the final day and he’ll find a way to stay on track and use his typical Team Penske advantage at a new track to do all he’ll need to do to take home the title.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Alexander Rossi, Felix Rosenqvist, Jack Harvey, & Conor Daly – You know my thoughts on Rossi. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rosenqvist took victory this weekend with the expected parallels to Mid-Ohio and the increased speed he’s shown at the end of the year. Harvey could have found himself on the podium, or at least Top 5, at Portland even he wasn’t taken out by Hunter-Reay. Daly will be eager to show what he can do in Andretti Autosport equipment this weekend.

Combine that with Oliver Askew’s unbelievable hot streak and there’s not much of a need to predict anything more than another Oliver Askew double victory in Indy Lights. My pick to win: Oliver Askew (x2)

NTT IndyCar Series Preview: Grand Prix of Portland – Sunday, September 1, 2019 3:00PM (ET) NBC – Previous driver experience at Portland shows just the two winners in the field in Sebastien Bourdais (2) and Takuma Sato (1). The active Top 5 in laps led in this event are Bourdais (146), Alexander Rossi (32), Sato (25), Ryan Hunter-Reay (19), and Will Power (14). Here is the box score from the NTT IndyCar Series’ return to Portland in 2018. That race was won by Sato and he was joined by Hunter-Reay, Bourdais, Pigot, and Dixon in the Top 5. My pick to win: Josef Newgarden – The Penske cars were fast last year in Portland (as they are almost everywhere) and Newgarden will be eager to grab as big of a championship lead as possible heading into the finale at Laguna Seca. I get the feeling he grabs another win this weekend to put himself in perfect position to win his second NTT IndyCar Series championship.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Will Power, Sebastien Bourdais, James Hinchcliffe, & Conor Daly – It’s hard to build a trustworthy team with Newgarden’s big salary this weekend. Will Power gives you a fast Penske car. Bourdais has the best history in the field at Portland. I like the Arrow SPM duo of Hinch and Daly this weekend. They get along well and will be eager to show how well they perform together before McLaren joins the team next year.

Indy Lights Preview: Cooper Tires Indy Lights Oval Challenge of St. Louis (Entry List), Race – Saturday, August 24, 2019 4:25PM (ET) – The second and final Indy Lights oval race of the season will be a tough one to call with limited history to call on. Results from 2018 show Andretti Autosport dominated at Gateway last year as Ryan Norman grabbed the win over teammates Herta and O’Ward. Based on that and Norman’s strong showing in the Freedom 100, I think Norman is the favorite this weekend. Freedom 100 winner and championship leader Oliver Askew should be strong but Gateway is a difficult track for a rookie. Juncos Racing struggled here last year with Franzoni so VeeKay may just need to manage the deficit and give himself a chance at the next two circuits on the calendar. My pick to win: Ryan Norman

NTT IndyCar Series Preview: Bommarito Automotive Group 500 – Saturday, August 24, 2019 8:00PM (ET) NBCSN – Previous driver experience at WWT Raceway shows just the two winners in the field since the NTT IndyCar Series returned in 2017 (Josef Newgarden) and 2018 (Will Power). The Top 5 in laps led at Gateway are Scott Dixon (223), Newgarden (170), Power (98), Tony Kanaan (21), and Simon Pagenaud (13). Looking at the box scores from 2018 and 2017, only Dixon and Pagenaud have finished in the Top 5 in each of the last two years. If that’s expanded to the Top 10, those two are joined by Rossi and Newgarden. My pick to win: Will Power – When Power gets hot, he’s as good as anyone in the field and might be the best in the business at building a win streak. As the defending winner at Gateway and winner last time out at Pocono, I like Power’s chances this weekend.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Sebastien Bourdais, & Colton Herta – You know my thoughts on Power. Hunter-Reay is due for some good luck on his side and has shown speed everywhere. Bourdais is a solid pick at $24, but keep an eye out for Ferrucci if he out qualifies his teammate. Herta has the pace and just needs to get to the end of the race. He drove well at Gateway last year in Lights.

NTT IndyCar Series Preview: ABC Supply 500 – Sunday, August 18, 2019 2:00PM (ET) NBCSN – Previous driver experience at Pocono Raceway shows four former winners in the field in Will Power (2), Scott Dixon (1), Ryan Hunter-Reay (1), and Alexander Rossi (1). The Top 5 in laps led are Rossi (228), Power (191), Tony Kanaan (147), Marco Andretti (97), and Dixon (95). Rossi and Power have won over the last two years. Looking at the box scores from 2018 and 2017, Rossi, Power, and Josef Newgarden have finished in the Top 5 in each of the last two years. If that’s expanded to the Top 10, the list includes Dixon and Simon Pagenaud. My pick to win: Alexander Rossi – Rossi dominated this race last year and has been the best driver in the series on the big ovals over the last couple seasons. He needs a win this weekend to really bolster his championship hopes and I think he’s going to get the job done.

My fantasy.indycar.com picks: Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Colton Herta, & Santino Ferrucci – This week’s pricing makes it really to tough to front load your team with the favorites in Rossi, Newgarden, and Pagenaud. I’m going with balance here. Power has done well at Pocono in recent years and is good value at $28. Hunter-Reay has a couple podiums at Pocono and you know the Andretti cars will be fast on a superspeedway. To finish out my lineup I’m going with two rookies you know will put on a show and just hope they finish in Herta and Ferrucci.
